The Depression-Insomnia Link

One of my favorite podcasts, KQED Forum, ran a recent episode on the link between insomnia and depression. Stanford sleep specialist Michelle Primeau provides a detailed description of cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I). [audio mp3=""][/audio]

Some key points:

  • Insomnia was long seen as a symptom of depression, but in many cases is a cause of depression
  • CBT is an effective treatment for both insomnia and depression
  • CBT can be more effective and longer lasting than sleeping pills

It also includes a nice, detailed description of CBT for Insomnia. It's worth a listen.
