“You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.”
― Jon Kabat-Zinn
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an eight-week program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. MBSR offers an invitation to move toward greater balance, control and participation in life. It introduces participants to practices for cultivating ease, resilience and uprightness in the midst of difficult life circumstances. This may involve relating to and working with stress, pain, illness and the many challenges and demands of day-to-day life.
Through this course participants will be introduced to a variety of simple meditation and movement practices designed to cultivate presence and awareness. Practices include sitting meditation, body awareness, yoga and mindful movement as well group discussions and a range of informal meditation exercises.
MBSR has been extensively researched in many settings since it's introduction to Western medicine by Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD in 1979. Three decades of published reseach and clinical studies indicate that the majority of people who complete the course report:
- Lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms
- An increased ability to relax
- Reductions in pain levels and an enhanced ability to cope with chronic pain
- Greater energy and enthusiasm for life
- Improved self-esteem
- An ability to cope more effectively with both short and long-term stressful situations.
Ultimately, MBSR is about 'waking-up' to our lives - reconnecting with what's important and what it is to be alive and present in this moment. In this way, we gain access to our deepest inner resources for living, healing, and coping with stress. We also discover an ability to connect more fully with ourselves, our loved ones and the life we're living.
The class will be co-led by Krista De Castella and David Perls, and is designed for people who are searching for more balance and contentment in their lives. It is appropriate for people of all ages and backgrounds and for those suffering from stress (job, family or finanical), chronic pain and illness, anxiety and panic, sleep disturbances, GI distress, fatigue, high blood pressure and headaches. MBSR supports individuals as well as the work of therapists and other caregivers and is suitable for health and business professionals as well as those in the general community.
